The Push "Whiplash" begins showing a young student named Andrew Neiman(Teller) that aspires to become a great musician. He's one of those drummers thats good, but not as great as he could be. Flectcher(Simmons), a top level conductor, notices this and gives Neiman a shot a playing in his prestigious studio band within Shaffer Conservatory. Neiman excited for the opportunity places himself before the drum-set only to learn that his drumming lessons have only just begun. "Whiplash" is an amazing story of one man's perseverance and determination to push beyond the limits of his musical abilities and reach an impossible level of skill only reserved for legends. Miles Teller brings the magic home in his sweat-soaked, blood spilling performance at the tempo of the unnerving J.K Simmons. Perseverance & Dedication The level of commitment it takes for someone to achieve greatness is more than most are willing to sacrifice. As people, we tend push until there is difficulty and then we slow down or try something new. Neiman pushes through both psychological and physiological breaking points to hit a level which we can only title, "Legendary Status". When you watch this film, you're not only going to see a captivating display of emotion, you're going to feel every bead of sweat that hits the cymbals. Unbelievable Drumming! The drums..the drums..the drums...simply divine. The jazz drumming in "Whiplash" delivers a transcendental experience, if only for a moment. The phenomenal level of skill we get to witness on screen is just jaw-dropping and to think Miles Teller is actually holding the sticks! Now, we know that Hollywood has a few tricks up it's sleeve for splicing and delivering some decent fakes, but this one is by far one of the best. The drum sequences you see in the film are a good 90% Miles mixed in with an authentic talent. Not to say that Miles doesn't rock the house, but if could play like that he wouldn't need to shoot one movie..ever ^_^ Final Thoughts On "Whiplash"... "Whiplash" is an amazing film to watch that's full of intensity, passion and great music. It's not often that films such as this are created and executed with such precision. Damien Chazelle may have hit a home run with this title because it is a movie to see, but more importantly one not to miss. If you don't play an instrument now, you'll probably be wanting to play one soon after watching ;) Thanks for reading -Unhinged Reviews- If you enjoyed this Unhinged Review of "Whiplash", share it with a friend to support the site and stand behind a great film.
