![]() "Sometimes when an author encounters writer's block, they must seek inspiration from both the living and the dead to find their story". -Unhinged Reviews During the course of one's writing career, there will be many moments of uncertainty, periods of mental block and a desperate race to find inspiration. Fortunately, for Mr. Hall Baltimore, his inspiration finds him and leads him into writing one of the greatest stories he will ever know. "Twixt" is a film that drifts between fantasy and reality with an ominous tone baked into it's gooey goodness. Francis Ford Coppola wrote and directed this dark tale tale and picked Val Kilmer to play the lead. We missed you Val, now let's Unhinge this "Twixt". "Twixt" begins with showing veteran writer, Hall Balitmore(Kilmer), stumbling into a small town during a book signing tour. Hall makes the most of his dismal stop, but it's hard for him not to notice the outdated feel of the community. There's no hustle and bustle of a major city or even a twinge of sophistication in the townspeople. The people are "simple-minded' and his recent writings of a witch hunt would seemingly do little more than remind one of the locals of their own cousin. So it wasn't long for him to get the itch to leave and that's when Sheriff Bobby LaGrange(Dern) puts a bug in his ear. Not literally, but he speaks of a town story that sparks Hall's interest. Now what kind of story could it be? Mass murder, witchcraft, vampires? How about, all of the above! "Twixt" is one of those movies that allows viewers to follow a character through a series of dream-like states in the pursuit of truth within the character's reality. Now, being that Francis wrote the film, we already knew that it was going to be something different and refreshing, but when he threw Kilmer on top, we didn't know what to expect! Kilmer, as we all know, hasn't really received any substantial roles since "Tombstone" or "The Doors", so we wondered as many of you probably are, "Does he still have it?" Well, after watching we can say that the fire is still in him and he's open to expanding his horizons. You're going to see a different side of Val than you've probably seen in some of his other films and this is because he is playing , Hall Baltimore. Hall is a character that loves to tie one on and from the looks of it, he's tied one on too many and this has resulted in some serious misfortunes. His publisher doesn't believe in him and even his wife doubts his abilities, "Is there ever a greater inspiration to write?". What's interesting about the character's shortcomings is how much they parallel Kilmer's real-life struggles. Kilmer aside, the story drifts into a twisted spin of race against time for Hall. He must write a script to astound audiences, but at the same time, "Stay Alive"! He comes across some interesting characters along the way though like the "Great" Edgar Allan Poe, who serves to be his muse throughout this dark screenplay. There's really not much else to be said about the film's plot without giving it away. If you want more info on the technical aspects of the production like cameras used, we suggest checking out the behind the scene footage on the dvd. If you watch it, you'll get to see Kilmer slipping into one of his more sinister characters..lol. So if you're not headed to the movies tonight and are a fan of Coppola's writing or you're a bona fide Kilmer groupie, give this film a try. If you enjoyed this Unhinged Review of "Twixt", please share this with others, so that the meteor flying towards our window doesn't smash into the building..lol -Unhinged Reviews- Thanks for reading
