So the film starts out, by showing the uncanny events as to how Mr. Mark Wateny becomes stranded on the Red Planet.
With just a little imagination you can figure it out, but the struggle isn't him being left alone on Mars..Nope not at all.
The problem is in the question of Mark's ability to perform outside of his pay grade and figure out how to survive stranded in space longer than any recorded man in history.
It's going to be a tough road because after all, no one has done this before. Mark is the first human to try his hand at defying the natural order of evolution.
But can he do it? Will his Botany be strong enough to withstand the test of time? Well, to find out you'll have to watch the film;)
The Impossible Solution
Now as we know, no protagonist's struggle would be complete without seemingly insurmountable odds.
The challenges must be difficult and damn near impossible to capture one's interest with all the havoc we've seen in film today.
We've watched movies where people and buildings have been consumed by flames. We watched mortar blasts severe limbs just as easy as knives cut through hot butter.
So how exactly does Ridley Scott make Mark's story intriguing enough to make viewers sit through a 120 minute plus film without going to the bathroom at least once?
Well, he presents Damon's character with multiple challenges all themed in the name of survival and intuition.
Not only must he figure out how to survive, he's got to decide how the hell he would even get home and come to grips with the fact that this may not even be an option.
It's an impossible situation and it will take all he's got to even begin to contemplate a solution.
After Watching, The Martian...
We couldn't help, but to wonder what we would do in his situation. What would you do if you were left stranded on a planet with no means of communication and only a small supply of food?
Would the limited knowledge that you currently possess about the way that planets work be enough or would you pray for a miracle?
