![]() How much would you sacrifice to write the perfect story? Would you be willing to put your family's lives on the line for your next 15 minutes of fame? Shocking question, but somehow, Ellison Oswalt(IHawke) thinks it's only a small price to pay for the ultimate inspiration. "Sinister" is the chilling tale of a desperate author that moves his family into a horrific crime scene, all for the sake of writing the perfect book. Too bad nobody told him that this is one story that might be better left untold. "Sinister" is a film directed and co-written by Scott Derrickson who is no amateur when it comes to producing high quality horror. Derrickson had already earned director credits for many popular horror films such as "Hellraiser Inferno" and "The Exorcism of Emily Rose" before he even decided to wave his wand in this "Sinister" tale. Once you see the movie, you will definitely be awaiting future films of his influence. So let's take a look at this 2012 release and see just how dark a good story can get. "Sinister" starts off with showing some old school Super 8 footage of chilling events that unexpectedly removed several occupants from the home that Mr. Oswalt believes to be his biggest inspiration. This opening scene definitely sets the tone for a great experience in the world of horror, but it is only known to the viewer and it has only become vaguely familiar to Mr. Oswalt. So as Ellison's family moves into their new home, we encounter the usual jousts of children wanting to return to the old neighborhood and learning to love the new one. This is typical fare for a good horror story, but it's Mr. Oswalt's desperation that even makes this movie possible. For if Ellison had told his wife about his limited history of the home prior to moving in, the Oswalts would never have experienced the horrors that await our viewing pleasure. And so as the movie moves on, Ellison discovers a box and this is by no means just a "box". This square storage receptacle contains some of the most graphic and sinister footage known to man. Anyone with half sense finding a box such as this would bolt for the nearest law enforcement office or at the very least leave the home, but not Ellision. For you see, Ellison is on the hunt for "The Big Story", "The Great Book" that will put his name on the map, forever. And it's that very same self-centered lust for creativity that threatens to make sure Ellison, never writes another book again. "Sinister" is an amazing film which should definitely be viewed by fans of horror, as it has pure evil and desperation all rolled into one. Ethan Hawke demonstrates some growth in his acting efforts in his portrayal of Ellison, a man willing to sacrifice his sanity and family's safety for the sake of writing a good book. The supporting cast members also deliver quality performances that add value to the story, but the soul of "Sinister" is centered around Ellison and his turmoil over the box of film. Now, we will warn you that this isn't a family film and should only be viewed by those looking for a chilling experience in the world of horror. So if you haven't seen "Sinister" yet, you may want to give Redbox or your favorite movie rental a shout because this is one to see! I reviewed this when it came out in cinemas, it was funny watching, what I call, popcorn fountains, exploding in to the air as the audience lept out of their seats. Goof film though.
