![]() "A lot of movies overlook quality dialogue in a film, but this one hits the mark!" -Unhinged Reviews "Scenic Route" is a captivating story crafted from the mind of Kyle Killen about two friends stranded in the desert. Now, when most people think "Stranded In The Desert" they think of psycho-hitchhikers and fleeing con-men, but you won't find that here. What you will find are two friends digging into the core of their longtime relationship and hashing out some of the discrepancies that they have encountered over the years. "Scenic Route" is one of those movies that truly connects with the viewer and shows us what "real" friendship is all about. So, now that the intro is over, let's Unhinge! We're going to start this review off a little different, by telling you what we liked most about the film, first. Okay, so what initially sold us on this particular film is the dialogue. The deep intimate conversations exchanged between Mitchell(Duhamel) and Carter(Fogler) hit some core topics that many of us have had with our own chums out here in the real world. Have you ever questioned a friend's choice of career or spouse? Whose never thought that if their bud would just get up off their haunches they could be a better person? This is what friendship is all about, testing each other's limits and pushing one another to be at their best. But in all fairness, it isn't just the dialogue that has us all stoked about "Scenic Route". It's also their physical interactions with one another other, as well as, the environment. Two individuals discussing difficult content while doing their best to maintain sanity under extreme conditions. You know the desert can be excruciatingly hot during the day and colder than a brass bra at night. How well would you fare if stranded with your bestie and left with not even the barest of essentials? Do you think your friendship would weaken or strengthen? Now that we're done rambling, let's get into the plot(lol). So the movie starts off with the two friends cruising along the highway listening to some tunes when all of a sudden, "Kaput" the engine dies! Of course they do their best to respond with reasoning and borrowed experience from years of driving, but it is just not enough to get their vessel back onto the high seas. So they are stranded for lack of a better term and it is all they can do to get back up and running. They try everything from flagging people down to jerry-rigging the engine, but it's hopeless, they are indefinitely stuck. So of course you know, two friends with an infinite amount of time to kill, they begin to chat and eventually talk themselves into some hard topics. Now, we won't tell you what they touch on, but we will say that their conversation of choice is a rather difficult one that flairs more than a temper. You ever have a conversation like that with your friend? Where they say some truths that you don't want to hear and you say some things back just to level the field? But unlike us, Mitchell and Carter can't walk away because they are stranded together and must hash it out through all the good, the bad and the ugly. Meanwhile, the hazards of the desert become all too clear and begin to take a toll on the two chums. Dangers such as no water, no food and no shelter lean ever-heavy on these two driving them to new heights of discomfort and uncertainty. So what do you think happens when you put a close-knit friendship such as theirs into a situation like that? Will they overcome they overcome the harshness of the desert cold? Or will the heat of their conversation and burn of the sun make their time in the desert too much to bear? As we expressed up above, this movie is amazing! It's a great story and definitely one to watch. "The Goetz Brothers" directed Killen's story and from our view point, they did an excellent job. "Scenic Route" has drama, action and most importantly a friendship that is put through the ultimate test of compromise and loyalty. This is a movie that should be watched by individuals who enjoy quality dialogue, as well as, the three stones of conflict. So what are you waiting for? It's on Netflix now...go watch it!
