Where do two little girls run when they have lost everything they have come to know and love? Well, they run to Mama of course, but not the kind of "Mama" you have in mind.
Lilly and Victoria are two sisters who were abandoned by their father inside of a small cabin resting deep within the woods. This would spell certain doom for most, but luckily for these two there is a entity in the home keeping a watchful eye over their every move.
Megan Charpentier(Victoria) and Isabella Nelisse(Lily) star in this suspenseful horror crafted from the mind of Andy Muschietti. "Mama" proves that the bond between a mother and her child is undying, even in death. Let's take
a closer look inside "Mama, as we Unhinge this suspenseful tale.
Gun shots and a father pacing frantically throughout his house are just a few of the images that you can expect to witness within this 2013 horror film. Muschietti created a small short in 2008 that he utilized as inspiration for his "Mama" horror which is guaranteed to fuel your curiosity from the very first moments of playing the dvd. Yeah that's right, I caught the dvd and didn't catch this title at the box office. If I would have known that it would be this good, I definitely would have gone to see it earlier. It's not the best movie of the year, but it 's a great start for horror films, hopefully the rest of the year's yieldings will hold a candle to, if not surpass this title.
Megan and Isabella's characters are the main stars in this film, as for without them there would be no story. They are two sisters hanging on to each other, while the remnants of their sanity make a last ditch effort to not drift away. Another prominent character in the film is "Mama" herself which is a smorgasbord of CG and "Grudge-like" behavior that would leave the most hardened viewer looking under his bed seconds after turning out the last light. There are also some supporting actors such as Annabel(Chastain) and Jeffery(Waldau), who are two connected souls that do everything they can to rehabilitate the two feral children now living within their home.
Now, what you won't find in this film are cheesy goblins or super sexy vampires, just good ol' suspense with a solid story and quality acting. It's a little difficult to tell you about this movie without giving too much of it away, but I will tell you that it's a good choice for a redbox night. Would I recommend this film to others? Most definitely, and I would also insist that young viewers are left in a separate room with the peaceful bliss of Blues's Clues or the newest Nickelodeon special.
