"Immortals" is one of those Epic Megladons swimming around the deep end of everyone's favorite abyss. It's the movie you love to watch, it's the movie you wish...was Real. For those that didn't know, mythology has always had a home here in the hearts of Unhinged Reviews, so we figured, "Why not review one of the Greats"!
"Immortals" came out in 2011 and we're still in awe, as we silently and most patiently await an Immortals 2 to come blow us away. If you haven't seen this one yet, you are missing out for sure! Now, shall we Unhinge...
Henry Cavill, as many now know as Superman ...
starred in this phenomenal piece of theater as Theseus, part man and part "god". He is the chosen warrior destined to lead his people into a great battle against the formidable, King Hyperion, who is played by "The Wrestler" himself, Mickey Rourke. This character, King Hyperion is one of the meanest, nastiest, blood-thirsty power mongers to ever terrorize the mythological lands of 1228 B.C, but all that will all soon change when Theseus learns of his destiny.
So, What is destiny? Some would say that destiny is our predetermined future, in short. Although, we here at Unhinged Reviews like to say that our destiny is the divine pull we are powerless against throughout time and space. Quite similar definitions really, but ours sounds a little more mythological, don't you think? It's interesting what a good film will do to your train of thought, it will have you writing as though your an old scholar capturing history's passages of time.
Okay back to the movie, let's see. Theseus's path to destiny begins by showing him living a life of contentment with his "god"-fearing mother, Aethra in a small village located high up in the mountains. Days are presented as long and calm in his quaint town, even though the villagers are unaware that a great warrior, a legend, "Theseus" is among them. It is only when a fraction of Hyperion's menacing army descends upon the village, creating complete chaos, that Theseus's "Awesomeness" begins to take shape. For you see, the carnage that takes place in his village not only causes pain, but ultimately, it awakens a Demigod.
Powerful, Powerful, Power-ful concepts in this movie! It's not often that films of this magnitude or even themes of mythological nature are gracing the "Big Screen" when you look at top films in Hollywood. Of course there was the quality 81' Clash of the Titans and the second-rate remake in 2010, but nothing like this. "Immortals" is just one of those films that makes you want to jump up and say "Yeah". We mean really say, "Yeah", like roof-top screaming "Yeah"! To put it simply, if awesome was a movie, this would be it.
When you watch this movie, you are not only entertained, you are transported to another life. Another time, another place, but all the while, you're just watching a great piece of theater. Not many movies, do that for us, as we've seen quite a few, but this is one that will do it every time. Have you seen "Immortals" yet? If so, what'd you think? If not, what are you waiting for?
