What's Ex Machina About?
"Ex Machina" is a film about a revolutionary idea being manipulated until it takes on a life of it's own. The idea is Artificial Intelligence and the quandary is can man tell the difference.
Time and time again, films have danced with the notion of creating a True A.I and placed their characters/creations in a variety of simulations. We've seen them portrayed as comical and heartwarming like Chappie and we've also witnessed them become as obsessive and destructive as Edgar. Alex Garland's work however, engages the viewer's intellect and places A.I on a higher plane. In "Ex Machina", the story opens with a young Bluebook programmer named, Caleb Smith(Gleeson) winning a once in a lifetime chance to participate in a Turing test of his boss, Nathan's greatest work. Once Caleb arrives at Nathan(Oscar Isaac)'s ginormous estate, he quickly learns that what he thought he knew about Bluebook and it's purpose was only the beginning. Nathan has created a state of the art A.I named Ava and she is light years from anything we've seen thus far. The events that follow during Caleb's time with Nathan and Ava are something to savor, something to enjoy and definitely something to see. But Just So You Know Ava Isn't The Only Star Of The Show
Have you seen Oscar Isaac's beard? Wow, that piece is stellar! It's in your face, well in his face and it's one of the boldest statements in the film. It's a beard that makes you stand at attention and pay homage to mind that grew it..lol
Okay, let's get serious. The rest of the cast in "Ex Machina" provide award-worthy performances as their interactions with Ava(Vikander) add even more depth and mystery to the compelling story. It's almost as if what is not said or shown that really draws you into the film. When watching, you will find moments that are tense and uncomfortable and at the same time you will find moments that are serene and hopeful. That's another quality aspect of this film as it evokes emotion from the viewer. You can not watch a film with this much depth and not find yourself cheering for one or all three of the characters. You may even find yourself going back and forth, kind of makes you wonder if we're part of the Turning test? After Watching, Ex Machina
