![]() "Elysium", the story of one man with enough courage to save the world. Let that soak in a bit... "Elysium" is a futuristic sci-fi/political film about the ever-evident invisible boundary that divides us all, even now. On one end of the lopside, you have those with money and power where as on the other, you will find the rest of us. It's always been this way, but hopefully, one day, we will have a great champion to stand up and alter the course of Earth's future. Matt Damon stars in this action-adventure, "Yeah, this movie crosses multiple genres", as Max, an ex-con with a want for change. He's tired of settling for the bottom of the barrel and aspires to inhale the sweeter air of the Rich and Privileged. If he had only been born a "Citizen" , he wouldn't have to want for anything, but for now, he must make due with what he's got. So what does he have? He's got the all the right reasons to not give a flip about what people think he can't do! The plot of film begins to find the earth's population divided amongst the rich who live in a man-made dynasty that hovers in space called "Elysium", while the poor reside in the rubble of the earth's remains. This dystopia and "Great Divide" is a result of overpopulation and widespread disease that forced the government to take some drastic actions to preserve what they feel is most important. So, what do they find most important? Money and that is the ultimate driving force in the film, as well as, the world we live today. This concept within the film alone prompts one to ponder, "Is this where our future's headed"? With that said, Max is one born without a silver spoon who must struggle and steal to get his basic needs met as a youth. This tenacity and pattern of mischief propels him into an adult life of crime which increases the distance in a bond between him and a friend from youth named, Frey. Frey(Braga) is one of the only things that Max finds good in the earth and he will do whatever it takes to fulfill a childhood promise that has what appears to be insurmountable odds. That is until a freak accident occurs at work which unbeknownst to Max, lines up his fate with the destiny of millions. Courage under fire? How about Courage to carry the weight of the world? After watching "Elysium" it's clear to see that the film has some quality CG, but this isn't the meat and potatoes of the film. What separates this movie from a lot of other After Earth-like films is that it actually has a well written story, courtesy of Neill Blomkamp. In "Elysium", you don't only have the "Woww" of awesome action, you also get the "Hmm" of quiet reflection. Jodie Foster also makes an appearance in this film, by playing the gridiron Secretary of Defense named Jessica. Let's just say, Jessica is someone who you want to play nice with... at all times. There are a lot of other notable properties within the film, but we're sure you'd like to discover a few on your own. "Elysium" is still in the theaters as it only came out on 8/9/13, so if your in the mood for some Sci-Fi entertainment, this is one to watch. Glad you enjoyed the review! One has to wonder if our civilization will one day be close to any of these futuristic wastelands often depicted in the theaters...
