![]() "You can train your whole life to be prepared for everything, but when something actually happens, you're lucky if you remember anything" -Unhinged Reviews So if you haven't heard, "Captain Phillips" is up for a few Academy Awards this year and after watching the movie, we can see why. This movie is the type of top-notch quality you'd expect from Hanks and nothing less. Tom Hanks is one of those actors that has continually raised the bar with each character he takes on. We can imagine at some point, he will have a movie with just him sitting in a chair for one hour just looking in the camera saying nothing..lol Well, if you're ready let's pull up anchor and sail into the greatness of "Captain Phillips". Okay, so first off, "Captain Phillips" is a film based on true events. The true events being that a cargo ship named the "Maersk Alabama" was hijacked by four pirates around April 2009. Now, what makes this film interesting is that we're talking about freaking real-life pirates here, no Captain Jack Sparrow, but the real deal! Just imagine, you're Phillips cruising along in a boat about the size of an apartment building and four wild men try to scale up the side strapped with automatic weapons and an eye on your cargo. Yeah, crucial indeed! So the movie begins with introducing Captain Phillips(Hanks) as a seasoned seaman who has a deep love for his wife and an honest respect for the men in his crew. Phillips is painted as a meticulous man that pays attention to every detail, but rather than ruling with an iron fist, he speaks with direct understanding that motivates his men. This is an interesting point to mention because at the same time, at the other end of the film, Muse(Abdi) is preparing for one of the greatest hijacks he will ever attempt in his life. You know it's got to be pretty bad for four guys to even attempt to hijack a vessel as big as Phillip's ship. When you see the size of the boat, you'll know that these four men have motivators that far exceed anything that anyone of us have encountered, even on our worst day. The performances from each of the Somalian pirates is something that we don't often see in film. There's always been the bad guy with a fantastic back-story, but never really "real people" that you can identify with in something as grand as this. We also feel that this "genuine" quality within the performances is the main reason that so many people gravitated towards the film. You'll notice how the pirates, along with the crew of the Alabama are all very "real" walking, talking people just like us, well, maybe except for Tom Hanks..lol He's a millionaire! So if you're looking for something good to sink your teeth into, give this film a try, you won't be disappointed. Well, as the review wraps up, we'd just like to say that the story is simple, but it's the depiction of the events that make "Captain Phillips" a must-see film. Paul Greengrass did an excellent job of directing this movie and it's an experience you'll definitely want to have before March 2, 2014. You can watch it after the 2nd obviously, but it's always good to be in the "know"just in case, it wins an award. You can find this little beauty for rent at a Redbox nearest you, enjoy!
