 When it comes to pressure, some people rise to the occasion, while others splinter within, but for a select few, pressure is where they find their darkest talent. "American Mary" is a horror film telling the story of how one young woman finds her true purpose when the high cost of medical school prompts her to carve out a solution in the most taboo of ways. Body Modification! Now this isn't something anyone can just jump into, as you have to be skilled in the arts of the scalpel. Luckily for Mary, she is an up and coming surgeon with a precision slice and a hunger to fill her empty pockets. For those that are unaware of what body modification means, we'll make it simple. Body modification is the intentional altering of the human body for any number of reasons that can include self-expression and/or pure sexual gratification. "American Mary" delves below the skin to provide an shocking experience, as Mary gives customers what they want while at the same time showing some of the extremes that can happen in the pursuit of one's perfect beauty. We've taken the liberty of posting a few pics below to wet your appetite.
Now the interesting thing about the pics above is that, even though they may be shocking, they are not even close to what you'll see in "American Mary"! So getting back to the film, Mary(Isabelle), in need of money, finds herself becoming chummy with a small group of extreme body modifiers through a connection that she meets in a strip club. You see, originally she goes there looking for a small dancing job, but haphazardly finds an opportunity offering larger yields than she would ever get "twerking it" on stage. It is solely through her display of surgical prowess which she utilizes during the "opportunity" that captures the attention of a young dancer in the club named Beatress. Now Beatress(Risk), is someone that has taken body modification to the next level where her face strangely resembles a popular cartoon character from the early 30s. So now, you may be wondering what a stripper with some obvious mods would want with a young surgeon, right? Well, it just so happens that some procedures requested by those looking to alter their "born-form" are too risky or unethical for a mainstream doctor to perform without fear of losing their license. This is where Mary comes in, a young surgeon looking for money and ready to serve up whatever mod you can dream, but only for a price. The perfect setup right? It would be, but somehow along the way her old professor is missing and she no longer wants to finish medical school. Could something have happened to change her mind or is her new hobby piercing her way to an early grave? Overall, this movie was fun to watch since it puts a unique spin on an underground culture most of us know very little about. This film also isn't your average vampire flyer or zombie biter, this movie has some serious stones for even attempting to turn body modification into a horror film without disrespecting the beliefs of it's art at the core.
