Lupe Fiasco is an inspirational artist that has managed to find that balance in maintaining his integrity while still rising in popularity with the world abroad. He has consistently put out quality music that has not "dumbed down" his train of thought or underestimated that of his listeners.
Sure Lupe could put out a mediocre track just to get spins on the radio, but he does not bend to the will of the commercial world. Lupe puts superior content first, which is why he fan-base can always count on him to deliver the goods.
"State Run Radio" is a song off of Lasers that discusses the struggle that a lot of artist have when
they first come into the game. It seems their artistic vision which was once prevalent
in their music at the start gets transformed into a commercial money making machine. Now if one's in the biz just to make money, then this may work, but if you want to change the world you have to maintain your vision. Holding on to what's true is something that separates the real from the fake, so to speak. Lupe Fiasco makes real quality music that speaks to the masses without bragging about worldly possessions.
In the first verse of "State Run Radio", Lupe makes it a point to expose some of the false truths you're force fed from your youth all the way through adulthood. Think back to all the rules and policies you had to painstakingly follow until you were wise enough to craft your own way of doing things. It's a system of beliefs and ideas that we are brought up in that don't exactly set you up to win. You ever think of the reason they have selected reading in school? It's because those are the books and ideas that want you to form, they don't want you to read books that the government feels are too liberal or go against the design. That's the reason continuing to educate yourself once outside of school is vital, if you ever want to gain any semblance of the truth for your own understanding.
"Different is never good, good is only what we pick"- Lupe Fiasco- State Run Radio
Lupe goes even deeper into the details of the brainwashing that goes on in the world of media. If you hear something enough times, you start to believe it. Notice how the radio will play the hell out of a song you don't even like, but by the 15th time you've heard it, you know all the words. More than likely you've spread news of the song or information in one way shape or form. And that's the machine that is constantly spinning and recycling the message of conformity, they don't want you to be an individual. The fear of doing things different is what kills creativity, innovation and breeds clones to keep you in your place and the chosen few on top eating the crest of life.
Real artist like Lupe are on the forefront battling the misconceptions of world, encouraging young and formed minds alike to think for themselves. Don't just accept what's handed to you, ask questions! If you only take what life gives you then your not really exercising your rights as an individual to be free in all aspects of this great world. Lupe chose music as his platform to promote conscious decision and choice, what can you do with your platform or area of expertise? Will you inspire or stifle the minds of your brethren?
Unhinged Reviews sends a salute Lupe's way for making innovative music and inspiring others to take a stand in life. How's that saying go?
